After you have written your paper and you carefully checked your sources and facts, it is time to edit and proofread it. You can always rely on academic editing agencies to help you, but the tips below can also be used to edit your paper successfully.
First, read your academic paper out loud. This is one of the most important things you can do for academic editing. If it does not make sense to you when you read it out loud, it probably will not make sense to the professor or editor at the academic journal.
Reading the paper out loud will help assess the flow and clarity of the work. It also can help you uncover missing words or those that have been double typed. Also, you can find punctuation in this way.
Second, it is important to lose your ego about your paper. We know your paper is fantastic, but you need to take a step back and proofread and edit it like it is someone else’s work. Shut off your pride and read it like it is all new to you. Does the academic paper make sense? Now is when you should edit, clarify sections, and expand areas of the paper that are muddled.
Third, think about the word count. Word counts are used for a reason, which could be related to limits on space, the accepted practice in the field, or other reasons. Always attempt to stick to the word count guidelines even if you think you fulfilled the project requirements with more brevity than was required. Also, if you went over the maximum word count, you should do some editing.
Fourth, go over the paper for consistency. Has the document been formatted consistently on each page? Are you using identical fonts for every subheading and heading? Did you properly format figures, tables, and references? Not following the guidelines or using more than one style for figures and tables can make your paper look unprofessional.
Last, go over your references. Make sure that each reference is complete and the style of each one is consistent. You need to give the complete details for every source, including the name of the author, publication year, chapter title, journal name, etc.
Once you have completed each of the above steps, the paper will be ready to be edited by academic editing companies to ensure it is of the highest quality.
